Raising awareness on the importance of being trained as a Medical Interpreter

MiTio Training for Medical Interpreters

I learned the reasons why a professional medical interpreting service is essential, based on a comparison between a non-trained interpreter and a trained medical interpreter at work.

A non-trained interpreter incurs the risk of omitting, adding information or getting emotionally involved in the conversation, giving personal opinions without being required to do so. The latter case is especially true when a family member acts as an interpreter. Moreover, a trained medical interpreter sets the ground for a fruitful interpreting session by asking for a briefing with both the client and the healthcare provider, informing the parties that everything they say will be interpreted and inviting each party to speak directly to the other.

All the above is useful for my medical interpreting career for two reasons: firstly, because I am better aware of the best practices for medical interpreting, and secondly, because I am more prepared to answer possible questions by clients who are not fully aware of the advantages of choosing a professional medical interpreting service.
