Interpreters do not just repeat words, but they facilitate communication, so their communication skills get involved when performing the interpreting job, because the interpreted message has to create the same effect as the original message. To do this, the interpreter’s fluency is paramount.
Interpreters must also be able to engage both parties equally, because the medical interpreter can’t take sides with either party. Finally, the interpreter should not accept tasks if the language required is not the one that the interpreters is fluent or trained in, or if tasks are underpaid, or if there are any conflicts of interest between the interpreter and one of the parties.

Then the interpreter says that, when in need of clarification or repetition, the interpreter will raise a hand. Finally, the doctor explains what will be discussed during the visit. This kind of briefing is the best way to set the stage, for the parties to have the best possible outcome and prepare for the medical interpreting session.
